Fusion continued to create chances and tied the score when Scott netted his second of the game with three minutes left in regulation. The game headed to golden-goal overtime knotted at 3-3, before Travis Carpenter put away a loose ball after a corner kick to give Lee's Hill the vicotry.
The Division 1 Championship Final followed and saw a well-played match between Real International FC and FAC Corinthians United. Both teams reach the final with upsets in the semifinals as Real knockedoff second-seeded Casa CSL and Corinthians United handed top-seeded FAC St. Corinthiansits first lose of the season. The game remained tied until midway through the second half, when Real took advantage of a Corinthians UnitedmistakewhenJoe Merenda slotted a cross intoan open netfor a 1-0 lead.Corinthians United didn't quit and produced several chances to tie as the game wound down, but the Real defense was able to hold off their attacks and earn the championship.
On Saturday, the weekend got started off with the third-annual CSL Select vs. Fredericksburg Generals indoor exhibition game. The game serves as a chance for both teams to get out and have some fun, while also thanking their players and fans for their support, as well as to raise some funds for a good cause. This year the event raised money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (www.cff.org). A very strong Generals team handed the CSL Select team a 12-1 defeat for their third straight win in the series. The Generals held a 5-1 lead at the half, with CSL's lone goal coming from Fusion FC leading scorer Justin Daniels. The Generals got off to a fast start in the second half as they pulled away for a comfortable win.
At halftime of Saturday night's exhibition, CSL presented its regular-season awards in front of the large crowd in attendance. Real International FC took home two awards, earning the Stonewall Award for the top defense after allowing only six goals in 10 games, while Victor "Tim" Garnder earning the Golden Boot with 17 goals. The league's Fair-Play Award went to Misfits and FAC St. Corinthians, as both finished the regular season with only two yellow cards received in 10 games. The FC Fredericksburg Generals prevailed 18-2 over the Commonwealth Soccer League All-Stars on the scoreboard, but the main goal of the night was accomplished as the Fredericksburg Field House saw its biggest crowd of the Generals season Saturday night.
The night raised $450 in a raffle fundraiser for the U14 FASA Elite girls soccer team, which was recently invited to the Pitea Summer Games in Europe. In addition to that amount, CSL and the Generals each donated $500 to the teams fundraising efforts to be able to afford the trip.
The Generals, who are the defending PASL Mid-Atlantic Division champions, have several former or current members of CSL on their roster so it was only natural for the two to work together.
Supporting soccer in the local community is part of our mission statement, said CSL President Tom Leiss. It was a natural step for us to take to work with the Generals who have become a big part of the Fredericksburg soccer scene since their initial season.
Jono Rollins, a CSL veteran who scored one of the teams goals Saturday night, was happy to get to play in the game, but even happier to be part of supporting a worthy cause.
Im glad I got the opportunity to play against a high-quality team like the Generals, Rollins said. But Im even happier that I got a chance to give back to the youth in the community.
Playing soccer against tough competition is one of the best ways for players to become better and both organizations are dedicated to helping make that happen.
Helping these girls go overseas and play the game at the highest level does just that, said Generals player/manger Kelvin Jones. Hopefully, our contribution and the contribution of all the fans will help make their goal more attainable.
